Asst. Principal Double Bass, Buffalo Philharmonic since 1963
(This bio. updated 8/25/08, contact info.)
After leaving the 7ASO, I played 2 seasons (1961-63) with the Houston
Symphony, conducted by Sir John Barbarolli. The music making was wonderful,
but the salary and distance from my native Pittsburgh, Pa. led me to leave
the Houston Orch. with regret. Employed by the Buffalo Orch. the same year,
I have been there since. I teach at the University of Buffalo, SUNY at
Buffalo as Professor of Double Bass.

In the symphony, I was put in the percussion section, of course, but I was actually brought there
to sing with the orchestra. There was no "slot", as they called it, for a singer in the orchestra so
I had to be listed as playing an instrument which I also did. I was in the 7th Army Symphony for only
a year and perhaps a little less, but they were wonderful months and I remember with great joy every minute.
Following my tour of duty I was engaged at the Stuttgart Opera, then the Karlsruhe Opera and finally in 1962 received an engagement at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the leading opera house in Germany at that time. I stayed there until retirement in 1999, I was 69. I sang almost 1900 performances there and over 3400 in my entire career. It was a long but wonderful road. I am divorced and remarried. Have 3 children, all with PHDs. Now I enjoy my garden and ceramics.

I reached the orchestra in Nov. '56, driven up to Mannheim in Henry
Lewis' new Mercedes. In addition to playing, I quickly volunteered for the
truck driving job, setting out early in the a.m. for the concert venue and
thus getting to know the country I was to stay in 'til 1963. My last concert
was at the Brussels World's Fair. I went from there to the Mittenwald
Violinmaking School.
I further distinguished myself, in a period when the brass felt that
civilian nonchalance had fully eclipsed military discipline and that an
example must be made, by getting myself court-martialed (I neglected to
get a mattress cover reinstalled) and banished from the orchestra for some
6 - 8 weeks, with loss of rank and fine. High point: the tour in France.

Sam passed away on Oct. 16, 2001. He was from Chicago, and
taught in the public school system there and played mostly in the dance

AZ State, and where his baseball playing son was attending. He is survived
by his wife, Mary. These biographical details courtesy of Bob Rushford.
Additional comments from Bill Merrell: "Sam was 2nd trombone with
7ASO during the time I was in it. I considered him one of my
best buddies in the orchestra. He was a good, solid player, making a good
section with Porter Poindexter and Dick Kimball. Sam always seemed to be
happy and smiling and joking. It's so sad that we couldn't get him to be with
us all one last time."

a pupil of Arnold Jacobs (Chicago Symphony). Taught as a band director l961-l981 in Illinois and Texas, divorced (two fine young men the best of all that) and dropped out. Lost my teeth, can't play any more and not much left but memories---of which, those of the Symphony are some of the BEST!

Tony was drafted in 1956 and completed his basic training at Fort Hood, Texas. He also completed advanced training as a medic.
From there, he was assigned as a medic to the 3rd Armored Division near Frankfurt, Germany. It was in this position that he
learned from a personnel scout that the 7th Army Symphony Orchestra was trying to find soldiers who were also musicians to
fill openings. Tony applied and auditioned for Ling Tung. He was accepted and joined the orchestra in July 1957. He played
with the orchestra until he was discharged in November 1958. He met his wife Gertrud (Trudy) of 52 years in Germany while
with the orchestra. He returned to New Jersey, completed his education at Rutgers, and began what became a 30-year career
with RCA/David Sarnoff Laboratories. Tony was also a member of the American Chemical Society, an avid gardener and woodworker,
and he loved animals and nature. He enjoyed flying and earned his commercial, private and instructor’s licenses. He was
a member of the Blue Sky Club at Solberg Airport in Readington Township, New Jersey. Throughout his life, he continued to
play the violin in local community orchestras, which included most recently the Plainfield Symphony Orchestra. He died

too many distractions.
1952-53 Did my basic training in the Bavarian Alps and auditioned for

Returned to the jewelry business and studied to become a gemologist/appraiser.

Daughter Nadine, one of our twins, is a profesional cellist and just
played in the cello section of the Columbus Symphony. She played principal
